  Tricks!

Want to have fun training your dog to do tricks and earn a title, too? Take this Tricks! class.  Your dog will learn tricks like Speak, Crawl, Fetch, Get your (stuffed toy, etc.), Get In, High 5, Jump, Kiss, Paws Up, Shake Paw, Spin, Hand Signals and many more.  Then successfully demonstrate 10 of the 20 tricks required for the Novice level and you have a title! if your dog has earned its CGC you need only perform 5 tricks for the Novice level. Dogs will be tested the last night of the class.  (The levels are based on the requirements of the original titling organization:  Do More With Your Dog. AKC is now offering the same titles when tested by a CGC Evaluator--Melodie is an AKC Evaluator).  Your dog needs to be registered with the AKC to get the title--remember AKC registers mixed breeds in the Canine Partners program. Your dog does not need to be registered to have fun training Tricks!

Don’t see any openings for the class you want? Please email classinfo@smdtc.com and request your class! We may be able to make it happen for you!

Other Requirements: Dogs should be proficient in Basic Obedience. No aggressive dogs in class.

About this program

What they say about themselves

San Mateo Dog Training Club has operated as a licensed American Kennel Club member club since 1957, run entirely by volunteers rather than paid staff. Their instructors bring substantial competitive backgrounds—Cathy Dutra has judged AKC obedience for 13 years and is approved to judge rally at all levels, while Marian Pott holds AKC and AHBA herding judge credentials alongside 25 years of competitive training experience.

The club's class structure reflects its competition focus. According to their site, offerings progress from puppy kindergarten through advanced competition obedience at the Utility level, with rally classes spanning Novice through Master. They also teach conformation handling, scent work, and Canine Good Citizen preparation. Denise Gormish, who has titled English Cocker Spaniels in NACSW nose work and AKC tracking, leads the scent-based classes.

Classes meet in a dedicated training hall in San Carlos with fully matted flooring. The club describes their philosophy as building a closer bond between owner and dog through working as a team, with individual instructors noting they adapt methods to each dog-handler pair. Melodie Farrell, who teaches puppy and CGC classes, is an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and emphasizes positive, motivational techniques in her approach.

What does San Mateo Dog Training Club charge for board and train?

Group classes follow a structured progression from Puppy Kindergarten through competition-level obedience, with CGC preparation and a tricks class rounding out the offerings. San Mateo Dog Training Club requires prerequisite completion for most levels, and puppies need two DHPP vaccinations before their second session. Competition track classes go up through Utility level, requiring title completions at each stage.

Every six-week course runs $160, making pricing straightforward across all levels from puppy through competition obedience. The CGC Advanced course and Pet First Aid Workshop don't list prices on the site. No private lessons or board-and-train options appear in their offerings.
