Pet Prescription Team

Pet Prescription Team grew out of a personal experience with loss. According to their website, founders Krystal and Philip Emery started the organization in 2003 after caring for Philip's father during his Alzheimer's illness and noticing how much comfort their family dogs brought him and other residents at his care facility. That observation became the basis for a volunteer-run nonprofit focused on therapy dog certification and facility visitation.

The organization operates differently from typical training programs. Rather than holding classes in a dedicated facility, they describe conducting their 8-week certification course inside actual hospitals and care settings in Los Angeles and San Diego counties, including El Cajon. This approach, they say, exposes dogs to real equipment and situations before they begin visiting. Once certified, volunteers are paired with an assigned team leader and covered under the organization's $2 million liability policy.

Their visitation work has expanded into less common settings. According to their site, they've partnered with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Human Trafficking Task Force and run programs at LA County's Twin Towers jail, juvenile halls, and even Disneyland's employee wellness program. The American Kennel Club recognizes them as an approved therapy dog certifying organization, meaning member dogs can qualify for the AKC Therapy Dog title. They operate entirely with volunteers and describe running several community projects alongside their core visitation work.
