Michelle Leone - Owner
Michelle Leone began as a student at Cape-Able Canines with the typical complaints: “My dog jumps up! She drags me down the street on walks, and is destroying the house when left alone!” With Cape-Able Canines founder Aleita Downer's guidance, Michelle learned how to channel her chocolate lab’s happy energy into good manners.
Impressed with the difference good training could make, Michelle and Meg (her chocolate lab) took every class Cape-Able Canines offered. Michelle began volunteering to help in classes, and completed the Cape-Able Canines Training to Train 18 month apprenticeship program.
When Cape-Able Canines found a permanent home at our current facility in La Mesa, Michelle left her job as a dental assistant and began providing the luxury Bed and Biscuit boarding services, and later became the Happy Campers Day Care manager.
Michelle is now the owner of Cape-Able Canines, and lives at the facility, providing round the clock, personalized attention to the dogs in her care.

Jane Glickman - Trainer, CPDT-KA
Jane Glickman also began as a student at Cape-Able Canines. Her first dog, a mixed breed, was reactive and aggressive, which originally brought her to Cape-Able Canines founder Aleita Downer. Jane took as many classes as she could and learned many valuable lessons. Jane continued to take classes with subsequent dogs, completing classes from puppy to advanced obedience, and all kinds of specialty classes.
Her dogs have become her “demo dogs” that help her teach her group dog classes. She has participated in AKC events and her current Golden Retriever, Maia, has earned AKC titles.
The combination of more than 25 years of classroom experience and the 18 month Training to Train Apprenticeship program gives Jane a unique approach to dog training. Perhaps because of her background in classroom teaching, Jane loves to “do the research.” She continues to take classes from top trainers in the area, attend conferences and seminars, read the current research and attend webinars.  Positive reinforcement works equally well on dogs and kids!
Jane is certified as an AKC Canine Good Citizen, Trick Dog and STAR Puppy evaluator, as well as an AKC Temperament Test and Farm Dog judge. She is a member in good standing of the Association for Professional Dog Trainers International.

About this program

What they say about themselves

Cape-Able Canines operates out of La Mesa, California, offering group training classes, daycare, and overnight boarding from a facility that includes an 8,100-square-foot grass play yard. According to their website, the business was originally founded by Aleita Downer and is now owned by Michelle Leone, who completed an 18-month apprenticeship program there before taking over operations. Leone lives on-site to provide round-the-clock supervision for boarding dogs.

The training staff includes Jane Glickman, who holds a CPDT-KA certification and serves as an AKC evaluator for several programs including Canine Good Citizen, STAR Puppy, and Trick Dog. Their site states that Glickman has over 25 years of classroom teaching experience. The business describes its training philosophy as focused on teaching owners how to train their own dogs rather than training dogs directly—they use what they call gentle, lure-based positive reinforcement combined with some correction.

Class offerings range from puppy socialization for dogs three to six months old through advanced obedience, with specialty options like rally, agility introduction, and AKC title preparation. Their boarding setup is described as apartment-style rather than kennel-based, with dogs staying in climate-controlled living spaces alongside staff. Daycare operates on a required weekly commitment rather than drop-in basis, which they say allows for consistent temperament-based grouping during play sessions.

What does Cape-Able Canines charge for board and train?
