Lilith Erlenbusch discovered clicker training while helping a neighbor's husky after moving to the US from Germany, where she had previously run a vegan cafe in Berlin. She worked for a dog care company called Frogs to Dogs before founding Buddy, Dog Training & Care in Truckee in January 2017, naming the business after her first independent client.
According to their website, Erlenbusch's time working in the dog care industry exposed her to neglect and poor practices that shaped her current approach. She describes her training philosophy as force-free and relationship-centered, built on positive reinforcement. The business positions itself as an advocate that gives voice to dogs' physical and emotional needs rather than treating them as objects. She continues her education through Clicker Expo seminars at the Karen Pryor Academy and has attended workshops with trainers including Ian Dunbar, Ken Ramirez, and Dr. Susan G. Friedman.
The business emphasizes puppy socialization as a way to prevent anxiety-related behavioral problems, and also works with dogs exhibiting reactivity and anxiety. They currently offer consultations and virtual training sessions.
