Midtown Mutts fields a team of trainers with credentials from several recognized certification programs. Founder Cassi Perez holds certifications from both the Karen Pryor Academy and the Victoria Stilwell Academy, and has co-authored a puppy training book. The other trainers on staff carry their own certifications—including one with an applied animal behavior credential from the University of Washington and prior shelter behavior department experience. According to their site, they describe their approach as force-free and rooted in positive reinforcement, emphasizing that a dog's emotional and mental needs matter alongside physical ones.
The Sacramento facility offers an unusually flexible class structure. Rather than a fixed weekly sequence, their membership model lets clients drop into topic-based group classes—covering everything from puppy basics through reactivity work—so missing a session doesn't mean falling behind. They also offer a "Stay and Train" option they position as an alternative to traditional board-and-train: a trainer works with the dog at the owner's home while teaching the owner to continue the work themselves.
Beyond standard obedience, the business runs specialty programming including K9 Nose Work classes, agility basics, and sessions focused on resource guarding, husbandry handling for vet visits, and preparing dogs for life with children. Puppies completing both early classes can qualify for the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy title. An on-site boutique sells training gear and enrichment products, including handmade leashes produced in-house.
